Google has finally revealed its latest Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL phone. There were so many great features introduced during the launch event, two of them are about how great the Google Pixel 3 camera is and the ability to store unlimited number of photos and videos taken on Google Pixel 3 to Google Photos at original quality.
Sounds great. However, I recently discovered that there’s a hidden catch to it.
Google Pixel 3 Hidden Catch & Surprising Fact
Google Pixel 3 and Google Pixel 3 XL unlimited free storage on Google Photos for storing photos and videos at original quality is only working until year 2021. After that period, the unlimited free storage is only eligible for high-quality photos and videos.
Further digging on Google Photos help page, I found out that Google Photos unlimited free storage for Google Pixel family differs one to another: Google Pixel 3 offer for unlimited free storage ends on 31st Jan 2022, while Google Pixel 2 offer ends on 16th Jan 2021.
The surprise comes with original Google Pixel aka Google Pixel 1 (both standard and XL), it has lifetime unlimited free storage to store photos and videos at original quality!
Here’s the Google Photos help page, in case you would like to check it yourself.

Original Quality vs High Quality & Impact on Google Pixel 3
The next logical question will be, what’s the difference between Original Quality vs High Quality and how good is High Quality?
Disclaimer: I’m not expert in photography and videography, so bear with me if I’m giving you wrong calculation/understanding.
Google Pixel 3 and Google Pixel 3 XL comes with 12.2 MP back camera and 8 MP dual-front camera. They both can record 4K videos. Full specs of Google Pixel 3 and Google Pixel 3 XL, you can find it here.
So given the specs above, Original Quality on Google Photos means, you can upload unlimited and free any photos taken with Google Pixel 3 12.2 MP resolution on back camera or 8 MP resolution on front camera and any videos (including 4K videos) taken by the Pixel 3 cameras until the date the offer ended.
Now for High Quality on Google Photos, it means you can upload unlimited and free any photos not larger than 16 MP and any videos not higher than 1080p. Any photos higher than 16 MP shall be resized to 16 MP and any videos higher than 1080p shall be compressed and resized to 1080p.
Now if you look back at Google Pixel 3 and Google Pixel 3 XL camera specs, these are the impacts you get after the Google Photos Original Quality offer ended:
- Your photos won’t get impacted even when unlimited free storage at Original Quality offer ended, since Google Pixel 3 cameras are only 12.2 MP and 8 MP. Uploading in High-Quality won’t make your photos get resized.
- Your 4K videos will get impacted. After the offer ended, any new 4K videos shall be resized to 1080p. If you take 1080p videos or lower, they won’t get impacted.
So, not that bad right?
Are you getting Google Pixel 3?
With the hidden catch I’m just telling you, will you still buy Google Pixel 3 or Google Pixel 3 XL?
