Singapore: The Cheapest Data Plan – How to get 1GB data for 1-month long for just $11
Planning to go to Singapore and looking for temporary data plan while you are here in Singapore? Or you stay in Singapore and want to have the most cheapest data plan in town?
Disclaimer: The following tips are based on my personal experience, it may or may not be totally the same for your case and needs, but at least you get the picture of it since every one of us is using the phone and utilising and consuming the data plan in a different way.
If you turn out having the same/similar habit as mine on using the data plan, then hopefully this article can be a good share for you.
Here’s my typical data plan usage during 1 month:
– I rarely browse Facebook / Twitter / SnapChat ~ not that so social person 🙂
– I sometimes browse forums using Chrome browser for iPhone
– I quite often browse news using FlipBoard (images-heavy) and reddit (text-heavy)
– I rarely download application/game using cellular network unless it’s really urgent
– I rarely watch YouTube using cellular network
– The rest and whenever available, I try my best to connect to Wi-Fi networks (public or private)
Based on my typical usage, I only consumed on average about 200Mb/week. So if your number is more or less the same like me, then continue to read until the rest.
Singapore, currently has 3 telecom operators (well the 4th is not so far away): Singtel (red), Starhub (green) and M1 (orange). They often knowns as red, green and orange by local here.
From the 3, so far Singtel offers is the best to suite my needs.
It has multiple prepaid data plans from as low as $1 for 10MB/week until $30 for either 15GB/week or 5GB/month, but the following 2 data plans are the best to suite my needs:
1. 1GB for 1 week for $7
2. 10MB for 1 week for $1
How to Subscribe
Press *363 from your phone/dialer to get the Data plan SMS (like what you see on the picture) then follow the instruction on the SMS.
How to get 1GB data plan for $11
So assuming 1 month is having 4 weeks, here are the illustration and tricks to make it $11 for 1GB/month:
Jan week-1: subscribe the $7 data plan to get 1GB data plan for 7 daysJan week-2: subscribe the $1 data plan to get additional 10MB and additional 7 days, which means if say on week-1 you have finished 200MB, on week-2 you will still have 800MB left (balance from week-1) + 10MB (subscribed on week-2). So in week-2 you have 810MB left in your data plan
Jan week-3: subscribe another $1 data plan to will get another 10MB and another additional 7 days. If say in week-2 you have finished another 200MB (so in total you have spend 400MB), then week-3 you will have 610MB (balance from week-2) + 10MB (subscribed on week-3). So in week-3 you have 620MB left.
Jan week-4: again subscribe another $1 data plan to will get another 10MB and another additional 7 days. If say in week 3 you have finished another 200MB (so in total you have spend 600MB from week 1 to week 3), then on week-4 you will have 420MB (balance from week-3) + 10MB (subscribed on week-4). So in week-4 you have 430MB left.
And the next following week and/or month you just need to continue subscribing the $1 data plan until eventually you spend the whole data plan.
The Verdict
From the illustration above, for January I spent only $11 ($7 week 1, $1 for each week 2,3,4) and assuming on February i didn’t do much browsing – even lesser than my average, then it will be just $4 for my data plan ($1 for each week 1,2,3,4).
Do you guys find anything cheaper than my method? Do share them if you know. Sharing is power!
