Everything has a humble beginning and so does iPhone. Before iPhone is comparable today – in terms of RAM size – to its closest competitors – Android smartphones, Apple started with 128MB RAM for its original iPhone. Fast forward to today, all iPhone that’s newly introduced to the market – iPhone 14 series – are all equipped with 6GB of RAM – which is comparable to many of Android smartphones today – although 6GB nowadays is considered small for many flagship Android smartphones. To me, RAM is one of the key indicators apart from CPU, how complex and at the same time how efficient an operating system is. While the bigger the size of RAM is definitely better and helping the OS one way to another, but bigger memory may not be required if the underlying operating system and processes are fully optimized – which is what happen here with iPhone and iOS.
This is one of the reasons why Apple has the upper hand here, using limited amount of memory (RAM size) – especially if you compared to competitors, such as Google, Samsung, Xiaomi – iPhone with lower amount of memory / RAM can do a lot better – as seen on benchmarks and comparisons video, all thanks to tightly coupled hardware and software, worked together by the same company.

Do you think iPhone Memory (RAM) Size is considered small?
To me: Yes they are! But as you can see from the list above, iPhone RAM, overtime, has been catching up and getting more comparable now to Android flagship, although it’s still way behind many Android flagships today (which can carry 16GB RAM!).
However, since Apple made both the hardware (read: iPhone) and the software (read: iOS) together, Apple has the advantages to fully optimize the usage of the limited RAM size as efficient as they can, which in results, more often iPhone with smaller RAM size is winning the speed test with Android devices (Don’t believe me? Try Google or see them at YouTube).
