iPhone Tip: How to Change / Rename File Extension using Files App

In the past, to be exact is time before Apple introduce iOS 16, changing file extension or renaming file extension from one extension to another extension in Files app is not at all possible. But with the introduction of iOS 16, Apple finally has made another improvement to the Files app – you bet it right, Apple made it easy now for any kinds of files to change any kind of file extension we like. So if you are on iOS 16 or after, do check it out how to easily change / rename the file extension on your iPhone, using the steps below.
Here’s how to easily rename or change file extension on iPhone
Ensure you are on iOS 16 or after. If you are not on iOS 16 yet, follow the steps here to install on your iPhone: <link>
1) On your iPhone, open Files app
2) Inside Files app, tap on “…” then “View Options” then tap on “Show All Extensions”. Doing this will shown extension to all kinds of files.
3) Then navigate to the file you want to change / rename its extension.
4) On the file, tap and hold the file, until a menu pops-up.
5) On the pop-up menu, tap on “Rename”. This will make the file in naming-edit mode.
6) If you want to rename / change the file extension, then you can just tap on the file extension and change accordingly.
That’s it.
Bring it all together
With the simple steps above, now you can easily change any kinds of file into any extension you like. In the past, before iOS 16, viewing unknown extension file – but inside the file you know it’s just a plain text, such as .log or .dat file – is a pain in the mind, but now with iOS 16, changing or renaming file extension is no longer an issue.
