Not really using 5G? or having intermittent 5G connectivity? or worse, your area doesn’t have 5G coverage yet? Why not, switch off 5G connection on your iPhone in exchange for better and longer battery life?
If you happen to own any iPhone 12 models or newer (such as iPhone 13 series), your iPhone is compatible with 5G connectivity. High chances are the 5G setting in your iPhone is turned on by default. While 5G connectivity promises you better and faster speed, but 5G connectivity could do more harm than good to your iPhone as it become your iPhone silent battery killer especially if you have no plan to use it – perhaps because limited 5G data plan, or you have spotty 5G connectivity in your area(s), or you come to area where 5G connectivity do not exist yet. Here’s how you can Switch off 5G on your iPhone and how you can switch back on 5G on your iPhone when you need it
The steps are slightly different for single-SIM iPhone and dual-SIM iPhone, so go to the correct steps.
If you are using single-SIM iPhone:
Single-SIM iPhone means you have only 1 phone line on your iPhone.
To switch off 5G on your iPhone:
1) Go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Voice and Data.
2) Switch to LTE.
To switch on 5G on your iPhone:
1) Go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Voice and Data.
2) Switch to 5G or 5G Auto.
If you are using dual-SIM iPhone:
Dual-SIM iPhone means you have 2 phone line turned on at the same time on your iPhone.
To switch off 5G on your dual-SIM iPhone:
1) Go to Settings > Cellular.
2) Under CELLULAR PLANS, tap on the line you want to switch 5G off.
3)Then tap on Voice and Data.
4) Switch to LTE.
To switch on 5G on your dual-SIM iPhone:
1) Go to Settings > Cellular.
2) Under CELLULAR PLANS, tap on the line you want to switch 5G on.
3)Then tap on Voice and Data.
4) Switch to 5G or 5G Auto.
Bring it all together
Now you have learned and know the steps to switch off and switch on 5G connectivity on your iPhone. You now have the full control to choose between faster speed or better battery life. For my case, I prefer better battery life over the faster 5G speed, because the 5G connectivity in my area is still spotty and anyway 4G LTE is more than good enough for today’s apps and activities.
