Fret not, unlike the typical book you find on the book store, this book has so many images and considerably big-size fonts, so you won’t get bored reading on them. Book Summary: The Nostalgia Nerd’s Retro Tech: Computers, Consoles and Games
In this book, Peter Leigh or better known by his YouTube channel name: The Nostalgia Nerd is showcasing all computers (in relation to games), consoles and portables from Gen 1 (Magnavox Odyssey) to Gen 6 (PS2 era).
For the records and for refreshers, here are console generations and the (sample) consoles existed on the particular generations.
Console Generation | Sample Console (not all) |
---|---|
Gen 1 | Magnavox Odyssey, Atari Home Pong |
Gen 2 | Atari 2600, ColecoVision |
Gen 3 | Sega Master System, Nintendo / Famicom |
Gen 4 | Sega Genesis / Megadrive, Super Nintendo |
Gen 5 | Nintendo 64, Sega Saturn, Sony PlayStation |
Gen 6 | Microsoft XBOX, Nintendo Gamecube, Sega Dreamcast, Sony PlayStation 2 |
He detailed all the computers, consoles on their influences and as a bonus, he shared 3 games for each of them:
- Must see game for the system: game title that pushes the system limit (into something you won’t believe the system could deliver).
- Must play game for the system: game title you should definitely give a try.
- Must avoid game for the system: as the name suggested, something you should avoid from the system.
Book Review: Why I read this book & you should read this too
There are few books covering retro games consoles but Nostalgia Nerd takes on the retro games is unique and different. Not only it covers game consoles (and portables) but also computers that were used to play games back in the day (that’s the reason the book title is not retro games consoles, but rather retro tech). What I really like and couldn’t find on similar books covering retro games is that Nostalgia Nerd is sharing 3 games on every system he reviewed: one is for you to see before you die, one is the recommended game for you to try before you die and last one is the one you should avoid at all cost.
I believe if you are looking to relinquish some of your nostalgic memories on the retro tech and at the same time would like to get some retro games recommendation, this is the book you should get.
